Over a year ago Coast Capital became a B Corp, joining a growing movement of change-makers using business as a force for good. And now, in just one year, we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve been named on the 2019 Best for the World – Workers list.
The annual Best for the World list recognizes B Corps with exemplary scores in different parts of the business. The Workers list recognizes companies that scored in the top 10% of all B Corps for their employee-friendly practices, such as ownership opportunities, job flexibility, and fair-chance hiring policies.
We sat down with Roanne, Sr. Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Eric, Sr. Talent Acquisition Specialist to learn more about the award and what it means to Coast Capital.
Why did Coast Capital want B Corp certification?
Roanne: We introduced B Corp certification as a way to measure our impact, benchmark against best practices and demonstrate that we’re a socially-conscious company. What’s unique about B Corp certification is that it reflects the impact of our organization as a whole and that we care for our members, employees, communities and the planet.
What does it mean to be a Best for the World Honouree?
Eric: This means that Coast Capital ranks in the top 10% of all B Corps in the worker impact area on the B Impact Assessment. This is thanks to our focus on employees and creating policies and practices that put them first like our corporate culture, work environment and health and safety practices.
What does it mean for Coast Capital to be recognized as an Honouree in the Workers category?
Eric: Being in talent acquisition, I talk to candidates every day about what makes Coast Capital a great place to work, and share stories on our culture and the programs we have available to support our employees – not just while at work, but in their full lives. It’s exciting to be recognized as a front-runner in this category, and have yet another chance to celebrate what makes us great.
How does this mention align with Coast Capital’s commitment to employees?
Eric: We want to create a workplace where people can be themselves and put forward their best work. Coast Capital’s purpose is: Together, we help empower you to achieve what’s important in your life, and this absolutely applies internally for our employees as well. We constantly look for ways to make Coast Capital an even better place to work
What kind of feedback have we received from employees?
Roanne: Working for a purpose-led organization means that many of our employees have a strong value-set that includes social impact.
We recently asked our employees what a B Corp certification means to them and they mentioned everything from helping our members with their financial well-being, to volunteering in the community, to teaching financial literacy, to environmental initiatives, to an inclusive workplace. It was incredible to see what resonated with them on a personal level.
What’s next for our B Corp Certification?
Roanne: We’re continuing to encourage our employees to connect their actions to our B Corp certification and bring forward initiatives to create an even more positive impact for our members, employees and communities.
Being one of the B Corps connects us to an amazing community of local and global brands who are leaders in social and environmental impact. We’re looking forward to exploring new ways to partner with these leaders to advance our collective impact.
