Earlier this summer we wanted to help our members save more, so they could afford more. So we ran our Get Un$tuck contest–where all members who took particular, meaningful steps towards growing their savings were automatically entered to win a grand prize of $25,000 cash. Between April 28 and June 30th, members were entered into the contest when they either made a $50 deposit into their High-Interest Savings Account (HISA), added their payroll to a Coast Capital account, opened a HISA online, added a Pre-Authorized Contribution to a mutual fund, booked and attended an appointment with an advisor, and/or completed a Money Chat.
With over 91,000 of our members taking some (or all!) of these meaningful actions toward better financial habits, it’s clear that the contest drummed but a significant amount of excitement. Most excited of all? Our winner: Stan Haladik. Stan won the $25,000 Grand Prize by depositing money into his HISA. When he came in to collect his prize, we had to ask him a few questions:
What went through your head when you won the prize?
“This must be a scam! I never win anything. Especially from the bank!”
We understand Stans disbelief! And we’re proud of him for staying fraud-alert and being cautious about information that seemed too good to be true.
How long have you been banking with Coast Capital?
“A very long time, almost 50yrs I’d say. It was another smaller credit union then in Brentwood Bay”
When did you retire, and how are you enjoying retirement?
“I think it was 2009 […] It’s been great! I go down to Baja Mexico during the winter so I can stay in the warm weather.”
What do you plan on doing with your prize money?
“I have three generations of my family living under one roof, so I might look at a small addition or at least some updates to the house. I also need some expensive dental work so I think I’ll get my teeth fixed”
While we were chatting with Stan, he also mentioned that he turns 80 this year! He thinks this must be his lucky year now that he’s won the contest, so he might celebrate with a big birthday party in Mexico on Christmas eve and share part of his prize by inviting his whole family to join him. Congratulations again, Stan. And happy early birthday.
The stuff we have to say.
